Set overlooking the Waikato River, this 1950s brick and asbestos-clad home was dated, uninsulated and energy inefficient.

While the clients were largely happy with the existing internal arrangement, they sought a contemporary, low-maintenance home with reduced energy demand and stronger connections to the river and surrounding landscape.

The existing form was pared back and simplified, with refined materiality, clean lines and carefully resolved junctions creating a cohesive, textural aesthetic. Wide-tray Colorsteel cladding replaced the existing sheet cladding, providing durability and minimal maintenance, while the original clinker brick was plastered and painted to create a unified exterior. Aluminium screens and louvres provide privacy and solar control, while carefully positioned openings enhance cross-ventilation and connect the interior to the river outlook, creating comfortable indoor-outdoor living throughout the year.
